The game's plot is similar to those of other side-scrolling Mario games. New Super Mario Bros. follows Mario as he fights his way through Bowser's henchmen to rescue Princess Peach. Mario has access to several power-ups that help him complete his quest, including the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower, and the Starman, each giving him unique abilities. While traveling through eight worlds with a total of 80 levels, Mario must defeat Bowser Jr. and Bowser before finally saving Princess Peach.
Reviews of the game were very favorable. Praise focused on improvements made to the Mario franchise, while criticism targeted the game's simplicity, and similarity to previous games. New Super Mario Bros. received several honors, including Game of the Month awards from Game Informer and Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Editors' Choice Awards from IGN and GameSpot. In Japan, the game broke the record for the best-selling debut for a Nintendo DS game. Overall, the game has sold 29.09 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling game for the DS.

Only once he has the necessary stars will he be able to face off against Bowser and save Peach.

Walking Press the analog stick gently in the desired direction.
Running - Press the analog stick all the way in the desired direction.
Wall Hug - Hold the analog stick at the same angle as the wall to slide along it.
Jump - Press A to jump.
Double Jump - Press A to jump and then again after returning to the ground to jump higher than the first jump.
Triple Jump - Same as double jump but with a third jump added after returning to the ground. This last jump is the highest and Mario will do a flip at the apex.
Wall Jump - Jump toward a wall and then jump again to leap off the wall.
Reverse Back Flip - Press the analog stick in one direction and then in the opposite direction while pressing A.
Crouch - Press Z and Mario will duck
Crouching Slide - Run with the analog stick and then press Z.
Crawl - Press Z and press the analog stick in a direction to crawl.
Back Flip - Hold Z and press A.
Butt Stomp - Jump with A and then press Z for Mario to slam the ground with his bottom. Long Jump - While Running press Z and then A to do a flying leap.
Punch - Press B.
Combo Punch - Tap B three times in a row to throw two punches and a kick.

Swim - While in water tap A to swim and use the analog stick to choose direction.
Kick Swim - While in the water hold A to kick swim and use the analog to choose direction.
Climb Up - While hanging from a ledge press A to climb up.
Drop Down - While hanging from a ledge press down on the analog stick.
Climb Poles - Press A to jump at a pole and grab it automatically. Then press up or down to ascend or descend the pole and left or right to circle the pole.
Hand Stand - While on a pole press up until reaching the top. At the top press up to do a hand stand on the pole and then A to jump off it.
Flying - While wearing the Winged Cap triple jump or launch out of a cannon to start flying and use the control stick to steer. Z will cause Mario to butt stomp out of flying.

There's also a full town to explore, with a mine where you can find ore, and unclaimed fields where you can gather items such as fruit and flowers. The games are set two years after the games Pokémon Black and White, and the Unova region has changed drastically with new locations and Pokémon from previous generations. The player - Nate, the male protagonist, or Rosa, the female protagonist - starts in a location southwest in Unova called Aspertia City with Hugh, the player's rival. They are given a starter Pokémon - Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott - by Bianca, who is now Professor Juniper's assistant. As they venture out in Unova, they will challenge new and old Gym Leaders and encounter the new Team Plasma, while also meeting the old Team Plasma.

Near the end of the game, the Neo Team Plasma's plan is revealed. They want to freeze Unova using their technology and the power of the legendary Pokemon, Kyurem. At the Giant Chasm, Ghetsis orders Kyurem to freeze the player! Thankfully, N and his dragon (Zekrom in Black 2 and Reshiram in White 2) save the player in time. Ghetsis then uses the DNA Splicers that were stolen earlier on Kyurem, whose frozen wings shatter, revealing a set of energy asorbing node-like appendages! Kyurem then blasts N's dragon, sealing it back up in the Dark/Light Stone! Then under Ghetsis' orders, Kyurem absorbs the stone, fusing the two dragons together to make an even stronger dragon, Black/White Kyurem! The player then defeats the dragon, seperating it back into two, N's dragon is given back to him, while Kyurem flees to re-gain it's strength. After a battle with Ghetsis, he suffers a mental breakdown, and is taken away by the Shadow Traid.

Post-game, after a battle with N and his dragon, he kindly lets his dragon go, and gives the Dark/Light Stone to the player. Then the player can bring it to Dragonspiral Tower where he/she can catch N's dragon. If the player catchs N's dragon, Kyurem will re-appear at the Giant Chasm where the player can catch it too.
